Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Pilates and how is it different from yoga or other fitness classes?

  • Yoga and Pilates are both forms of exercise that focus on improving flexibility, strength, and posture. However they differ in several key ways
    1. Origins
      1. Yoga: An ancient Indian practice with spiritual and philosophical roots.
      2. Pilates: Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as a rehabilitation technique.
    2. Focus
      1. Yoga: Emphasizes holistic well-being through breathwork, meditation, and physical postures (asanas).
      2. Pilates: Focuses on strengthening and toning the core muscles, improving posture, and developing body awareness.
    3. Movement Styles
      1. Yoga: Typically involves flowing, holding, and repeating poses.
      2. Pilates: Utilizes controlled, precise movements often with the assistance of specialized equipment (e.g. reformer, cadillac, stability chair)
    4. Benefits
      1. Yoga: Improves flexibility, reduces stress, enhances mindfulness, and promotes spiritual growth.
      2. Pilates: Strengthens core muscles, improves posture, enhances balance, and tones the body.
    5. Suitability
      1. Yoga: Suitable for individuals of all fitness levels and abilities, with a wide variety of styles to choose from.
      2. Pilates: Is for everybody, depending on fitness level different equipment will either assist or challenge the client based on their needs.

Q. Do I need prior experience to book a private?

No, our private lessons can accommodate any skill level from introductory to advanced. We offer a fundamental package for individuals who are brand new to Pilates. This is also required for brand new individuals before they can join group classes.

Q. Do I need prior experience to join a group class?

Yes, our studio prefers all new clients take a private introduction lesson before joining classes. This is to assess your skill/strength levels and familiarity with our equipment. We want every member in our group classes to receive the same amount of attention from the instructor.

Q. What should I wear to a Pilates session?

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid overly loose clothing so instructors can check alignment. Also avoid clothing with buttons, rivets, zippers, buckles, and other things that might damage the equipment. Socks with grips can be worn, otherwise barefoot. No other socks allowed, slipping is a danger risk.

Q. Do I need to bring my own mat or equipment?

We provide mats and all necessary equipment in the studio.

Q. How often should I practice Pilates to see results?

We provide mats and all necessary equipment in the studio.aMost clients notice improved strength, posture, and energy after 2-3 sessions per week. Even one class a week can make a difference if you’re consistent.

Q. What type of classes do you offer?

Group classes and private/small group sessions. See classes here.

Q. Is Pilates suitable for beginners, seniors, pregnant women, or people recovering from injuries?

Yes! Pilates is low-impact and highly adaptable. Our instructors can modify exercises to meet your needs, whether you’re new, older, or working through an injury (with your doctor’s approval).

Q. How do I book a class and what is your cancellation policy?

Classes are booked online. Purchasing a package of classes can be done in person or over the phone. A package is required before you can sign up for classes yourself.

There is a 24 hour cancellation policy.

Q. Can Pilates help with posture, back pain, injury pain, or stress relief?

Yes. Pilates is well-known for strengthening the core and supporting healthy posture, which can reduce back pain. The focus on breath and mindful movement also helps lower stress.

Do you offer packages, memberships, or drop-in rates?

Absolute NO-NO’s during Pilates

NO-NO – Starting without the instructor, the party don’t start til’ I walk in

NO-NO – Banging the equipment like you’re in stomp the yard

NO-NO – Easy on the perfume/cologne, if the person next to you wears too much perfume/cologne it will make every controlled inhale an overwhelming experience

NO-NO – Mistreating others, this is a community not a reenactment of mean girls

NO-NO – talking throughout the class, disrupting the calm and focused atmosphere with stories about your weekend plans. Reserve that for before and/or after, we have comfortable seating!

NO-NO – ignoring the instructor, they are there to help you with form and alignment. If you’re not listening, you’re not doing Pilates correctly!

NO-NO – rushing through exercises and neglecting alignment. These are common mistakes that increase injury risk, we want quality over quantity.
